History

Lately in history we have been talking about the upcoming elections, the Civil War and most recently the Constitution. Today in class we had cookies and sang the Preamble to help celebrate Constitution Day. I will be mostly recapping the Civil War section. There are many things that can be accused as the reason for the causes for outbreak such as the constitutional issues which included: the 3/5 clause, the fugitive slave clause and the silent endorsement of slaves. Political reasons included: Dred Scot v. Sanford, the south being out number and tariffs.

We also touched base on the different battles by watching a black and white movie on them. Fort Sumpter was the first battle. There was no casualties and 4 more states succeeded. The battle of Antieton was fought starting on September 16th. They never left the field and 10,000 people died. In the battle of Fredricksburg 13,000 died and Hooker cut of the communication of Lee.

During Gettysburg Lee ordered an attack on the Union. Chuckamuga, wounded soldiers were given Whiskey and a bullet to bite to dull the pain. Abraham Lincoln wrote the Emancipation Proclamation which people always said was when he freed the slaves, which was not true. The Emancipation Proclamation was written January 1, 1865. It freed slaves in rebellious states (states that did not go by the Federal government). It exempted border states and gave moral purpose to the cause of the north.

Vicksburg was total war meaning i did not exempt women or children from being involved. The capture of Mississippi by the Union forces the last major trade route in the south to be cut off. The goals for the Constitution was to form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility among other things.

In class we learn things that also really do not go along with history necessarily such as Mrs G's jokes and things about her daughter. Everyday there is a new joke or there is an impersonation that she wants to try and she uses us has her joke lab rats. So to sum up the 5 paragraphs, we learned about a lot of really old stuff.

let's start off by saying Mrs. G's jokes are not funny. some but not all. but anyway i think you should have included that the women could now vote. i like how we song the preamble and had cookies on constitution day.

First of all--you ate all the cookies! No fair! Us red day kids would have liked some!

Anyways, never had so much fun in a History class before! Have always been curious about the goings on of the wars...but never thought I would be living in them, like Mrs. Garber's stories make you feel.

A great read! ;P

This was a good re-cap of some of the major battles through out the war. A lot of these battles are major turning points, and directly affected the course of the war. I think the way the Mrs. G teaches all of this stuff is really effective, because she has turned a really boring subject into something interesting to learn about with all of her jokes

This is a real good summary of what we learned in this class so far. I can agree with Tom when he says that Ms. Brick turns a boring subject into a slightly fun one. I though I was going to die when I first walked into the class on the first day. Anyway, like I was saying, this is a good essay on the recent things we’ve learned; such as the Civil war, Emancipation Proclamation, and Lincoln’s circumstances.

Interesting summary. Next time, go beyond summarizing what we have done and analyze it. Comment on things that made you think or that changed the way you view the world. Most of your readers were in class with you when all of those things happened, but they are not automatically privy to the way those things shape the knowledge, emotions, and opinions that were already forming in your own mind.

How did learning about those battles affect you? Were you horrified by the death toll? Were you surprised a tthe strategies? Did you think that one of the sides should have given in?

As an aside, I know my jokes are funny, because I comletely amuse myself. Seriously, though, all those things that you say "don't relate" are connected to our daily topics. They may seem far fetched, but my examples are meant to be meaningful and recognizable in your own life. If you need a different example, let me know. Still, it looks like you managed to learn a lot!
